Global trade relies heavily on the shipping sector, as 90% of the world’s cargo is carried by about 50,000 merchant marine vessels. Ocean-going ships are also responsible for 11% of the greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector, and these emissions are projected to double by 2050 unless we take action. Multiple strategies can be used to cut greenhouse gas emissions from ships, including electrification, improved logistics, and alternate propulsion technologies.
